You need an implant if you are missing one or more teeth and molars. Subsequently, an implantologist places crowns, bridges, or a snap-on denture, giving you a radiant smile again. When placing an implant, an artificial root replaces the missing tooth root. To have an implant placed, we will refer you to a specialist in your area.
The treatment can be divided into 5 steps: the consultation, implant placement, recovery period, the placement of the crown, bridge, or snap-on denture, and post-treatment care.
First, the implantologist takes a picture of your teeth. They check, among other things, whether there is enough jawbone present. The implantologist also assesses your oral health and any other dental issues. They create a treatment plan and provide a cost estimate.
You receive a local anesthetic at the site where the implants will be placed. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the implantologist makes a small incision in the gum to access the jawbone. Then, a small hole is drilled into the jawbone, into which the implant is inserted.
It is important to rest well now. Especially in the first 2-3 days, you should avoid strenuous activities, such as sports and heavy lifting. It’s also essential to keep your teeth clean. The implant needs time to properly fuse with the jawbone, known as the healing period. This resting period varies from person to person.
No worries, you don’t have to go around toothless. The implantologist can place a temporary crown, bridge, or snap-on denture.
Once the implant has fully fused with the jawbone, you’ll return to the practice. The implantologist makes another incision in the gum and replaces the temporary prosthesis with the final crown, bridge, or snap-on denture.
It’s important to rinse the wound two to three times a day with a mouthwash that we’ll provide you with a prescription for after the treatment. It’s crucial to maintain the prostheses as diligently as your natural teeth.
The costs for an implant depend on the extent of the entire treatment. The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) annually determines the rates for all dental treatments. View our rates page for current costs.
Implant treatment is not reimbursed from the basic package, unless you suffer from a serious development or growth disorder. In all other cases you must apply for additional dental insurance. Ask your health insurer how you are insured to avoid high costs.
After placing the implants, it is important to maintain good daily oral hygiene and to regularly return to the dentist to have your teeth checked. The dentist then looks at:
It is important to keep your teeth clean, because poor oral hygiene can cause the gums to become infected or loose. Brush the transition from the crown or bridge to the gums twice a day with a soft toothbrush and use toothpicks, brushes or dental floss to properly clean the spaces between the teeth.

An implant is placed when you are missing one or more teeth. Implants form a strong basis for a crown, bridge or click denture.
It is not always possible to have an implant placed. There must be enough jaw bone to give the artificial root enough support and your gums must be healthy. If there is not enough jaw bone present, you may be eligible for bone treatment.
