Cavities occur when you have plaque on your teeth and do not remove it in time. The bacteria present in the plaque convert sugars and other carbohydrates from food into acid. These acids attack the enamel on your teeth, causing cavities. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene and to have any cavities filled as soon as possible. Do you have a cavity? Then make an appointment online at Studentist Utrecht and benefit from the following advantages:
A treatment for filling a cavity consists of three steps: a consultation with diagnosis, drilling and actually filling the cavity. We are happy to explain these steps to you.
Not every groove or discoloration in a tooth or molar is immediately a cavity. In addition, a cavity only hurts when it is in an advanced stage. The dentist will therefore first carefully examine your teeth to determine whether you really have a cavity. Has a cavity been detected? Then your dentist will advise you on the options, including anesthesia during drilling.
To fill the cavity, the dentist must first grind away the affected part of the tooth. The tooth is then ‘dryed out’ to ensure that the filling sticks well.
The final step is filling the hole. At Studentist we use a composite filling. The filling is painless and afterwards there is rarely any pain. So you can continue with your daily activities immediately after the treatment. You can also eat and drink again immediately.
The cost of cavity filling depends on the size of the fillings and the complexity of the treatment. Dental rates are determined annually by the NZa. View our rates page for a complete overview.
Children up to the age of 18 are insured for cavity filling under the basic insurance. If you are over the age of 18, this treatment is not reimbursed under the basic package. If you have additional insurance, cavity filling is (usually partially) reimbursed. Ask your health insurer about your coverage.
It is important to brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Use an electric toothbrush with a soft brush head. For good oral hygiene, it is also important to keep the spaces between your teeth clean with interdental brushes, floss or toothpicks. Finally, you can prevent a cavity by going to the dentist every six months for a periodic check-up.
On average, the treatment takes fifteen minutes. The duration of the treatment depends on several factors: the size of the filling, the difficulty of the treatment and the number of cavities that need to be filled.
Composite fillings last for years. They can discolour over the years, but this mainly occurs in people who smoke a lot or drink coffee. This discolouration can then be corrected.
To fill a cavity, we can give you a local anesthetic. This means you will not feel any pain during the treatment.
It is not possible to fill a cavity yourself. Always make an appointment with the dentist for this.
