They check for cavities, inflamed gums, tartar, or other issues, such as problems with the roots of your teeth and molars. By coming in every six months, you can prevent serious problems. If any abnormalities are detected, it could also indicate other health issues.
The rates for periodic check-ups are the same for all dentists in the Netherlands and are determined nationally by the Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa).

Up to the age of 18, dental care is fully covered by the basic insurance policy. If you are older than 18, you will need supplementary insurance to have your dental costs covered. Depending on your policy and insurer, the periodic check-up may be fully or partially reimbursed.
